What is a clade?

A clade is an ancestor together with all of its descendants, a complete branch of the tree of life. Whether a named group counts as a real clade is exactly what the words monophyletic, paraphyletic and polyphyletic are for. Once you can spot the pattern on a tree, the three terms stop being confusing.

What a clade is

A clade is a node on a tree plus every descendant of that node. Nothing left out, nothing extra. The quickest test is the scissors test: if you can cut a single branch and the group you want falls away in one piece, it is a clade. If you have to make two cuts, or leave part of a branch behind, it is not.

A clade is also called a monophyletic group. Two other words describe groups that fail the test in two different ways, and a diagram makes each one obvious.

Monophyletic groups (true clades)

A monophyletic group contains an ancestor and all of its descendants. Birds are monophyletic. Mammals are monophyletic. In the tree below, crocodiles and birds together with their common ancestor form a clade (the archosaurs): one cut on the branch leading to that ancestor releases the whole group.

Paraphyletic groups

A paraphyletic group takes an ancestor and some but not all of its descendants. The classic case is the traditional group "reptiles" when it is used to mean lizards, crocodiles and their kin but to exclude birds. Birds evolved from within that lineage, so leaving them out breaks the clade. The highlighted group below wraps around the tree but drops one descendant.

Polyphyletic groups

A polyphyletic group collects organisms that share a feature whose common ancestor did not have it, so the group has no single ancestor that belongs to it. "Warm-blooded animals" is the standard example: it picks mammals and birds, but their most recent common ancestor was not warm-blooded, and the reptiles sitting between them are left out. On the tree the group shows up as two disconnected pieces.

Why it matters

Modern classification tries to name only clades, because a clade is the one kind of group that reflects a real, shared evolutionary history. This is why biologists say, correctly, that birds are reptiles: birds sit inside the reptile branch, so any "reptiles" that excludes them is paraphyletic rather than a true group. The same reasoning retired "fish" and "invertebrates" as formal groups.

When you read a tree, the terms map straight onto shape. A clade is a clean branch. A paraphyletic group is a branch with a piece cut out. A polyphyletic group is really two branches wearing one label. No. 'Fish' in the everyday sense is paraphyletic, because the group that gave rise to fish also gave rise to land vertebrates, which the label leaves out. That is why you will not see 'fish' used as a formal clade.
